7.9 Strategy 9: The Bollinger Band Squeeze

Financial markets follow a strict law of physics: Contraction leads to Expansion. When a market goes incredibly quiet, it is storing massive amounts of kinetic energy. The longer the market sleeps, the more violently it will eventually wake up. The Bollinger Band Squeeze is a strategy designed specifically to trap this energy and ride the explosion.

Understanding Bollinger Bands

Bollinger Bands are a volatility indicator. When you apply them to your TradingView chart, you will see three lines drawn over your candlesticks:

1. The Middle Line: A simple 20-period moving average.
2. The Upper Band: Mathematically calculated to be two standard deviations above the middle line.
3. The Lower Band: Two standard deviations below the middle line.
95% of all price action happens inside these bands. When the market is moving aggressively (high volatility), the bands expand and get very wide. But when the market dies and goes completely sideways, the bands contract and get incredibly tight. This tightness is called The Squeeze.

Step-by-Step Execution

1. Spot the Squeeze: Wait for the Upper and Lower bands to come extremely close together, forming a horizontal tunnel. The longer the market stays trapped in this tight tunnel, the more violent the eventual breakout will be.
2. The Trigger Candle: You are waiting for a candle to aggressively break OUT of the tunnel. For a 'Buy' trade, a strong green candle must pierce through the Upper Band and completely close outside of it.
3. The Band Expansion Confirmation: At the exact moment the candle closes outside, look at the Upper and Lower bands. They must both immediately angle outwards, violently expanding away from each other like an opening mouth.
4. Execute: Buy immediately. Place your Stop Loss below the 20-period moving average (the middle line).
